In the Groove - Matt Champagne

It happens to everyone. You head over to your local Q-zar just to play a few easy games of Energize, but once you get to playing you realize something is horribly wrong. You have this funny vibrating feeling throughout most of the game, and you don't seem to be getting much done. That's right, your having a bad game.

Everyone has a bad game, a bad day, or even a bad month from time to time. Just recently I ended up on the same team as a player I know who is MUCH (and I mean MUCH) more skilled than me, but I managed to get TopGun for two games I played while on his team. Then on the third game I was against him and was actually able to tag him about half the amount of times he tagged me (that doesn't happen often...like I said MUCH more skilled). He was having a relativly bad day. In his case, a bad day was still a pretty decent score, but I knew he wasn't satisfied.

Oddly enough, I had also gone to Q-Zar the day before. I was with 2 of my TYA team members, against a team of about 2 decent players and a bunch of newbies. Somehow I got some of the worst scores I have ever gotten. How could these two days, less than 24 hours apart be so drastically different? How could I have done worse the first day when the competition was actually more difficult on the second day? What is it that causes "bad days"?

Those questions can be answered in a quite a few ways. Most players, as a general rule, blame the gun/vest/arena/marshal/base/energizer/their grandmother....whatever they can lay the blame on. Such problems do occur, but most of them can be fixed. If you have a bad gun you change it. But all of these things can't explain a running streak of bad scores. There are only two explanations for this: your not as skilled as you competition, your mental stress.

As for skill, the obvious solution is practice so I won't go in depth about things as simple as that. However, mental stress is a fairly unnoticed yet powerful factor in games. I've found the best way to eliminate stress is to find a way to remind yourself that you are there to PLAY. This is especially important when playing competitively. When playing competitively it's easy to begin worrying about you the prize at steak, or what other players are going to think of you. This is the last thing you want to do.

One simple way to eliminate some problems is to play a game in the lobby. Most Q-zars have an arcade or at least some pool tables so play a game or two and relax. Even if your local Q-Zar doesn't have an arcade there's nothing to stop you from bringing a deck of cards or something.

Once inside the arena you may want to just play around while waiting for the game to start. once guy I know covers his infrared laser but keeps his laser sight uncovered and starts shooting his own team. Once group practices covering against one another while telling jokes or just talking. Some of the more extreme goof-offs do strange dances, or hump the energizer. What me a few of the guys from TYA do is walk around the base singing the "Gilligan's island" theme song. The point is to stay occupied and entertained. Remember, your there to have fun.

Finally, you'll want to keep your easy-going composure once the game has started. As long as you are doing it in a friendly manner, some mild trash talk might add some style to your game. While not exactly trash talk, what I do is whenever a friend of mine misses me, or I cover their reflex I mockingly yell "NO!". Some of my friends like to shoot someone then after they're down shoot them in their private areas...somewhat humiliating I have to admit. As long as no one is taking offense to what you are doing, do all you can to keep having fun. Oh yeah...and try not to get too upset if you get tagged.
